PACE-SD

PaCE-SD fosters the development of a research culture that serves the region by involving communities and stakeholders.

This is enabled by a successful track record of international research and aid funding. The vision supports the USP 2013 – 2018 Strategic Plan which aims to meet the needs of the region. The Centre serves the University through several components that align to the larger USP strategic priorities. These include:

  1. Capacity Building – PaCE-SD’s diverse functions are facilitated by the center’s strong human resources and infrastructure capacity. In addition to a permanent staff of 64, PaCE-SD continues to expand its professional capabilities by fostering strong links to industry and through opportunities like internships for both local and international students.
  2. Applied Research – PaCE-SD supports a wide range of both formal and informal training in the area of climate change. This includes postgraduate training at Diploma, Masters and PhD levels, as well as workshops and training. The center also contributes to research in the field of climate change, environment and sustainable development via ongoing research, consultancy and publication.
  3. Community Engagement – Community outreach, particularly into rural areas, is vital and is supported in partnership with USP’s Institute of Applied Science and government and CROP agencies. PaCE-SD recognises the need for raising awareness about climate change related issues at all levels of society, and has produced communication materials and carried out awareness raising campaigns at high school, tertiary and community levels.
